This state's license plate history is told in green on white, except for the years 1978 and 1979 when the colors were red on white.

The first license plate was issued in 1905.

The motto "SCENIC" was first introduced in 1957.

In 1963 the motto was changed to "PHOTOSCENIC" but was changed back to "SCENIC" in 1964.

In 1965 the motto was changed, this time to "LIVE FREE OR DIE". This motto caused quite a bit of controversy and was challenged in the Supreme Court. The US Supreme Court ruled that the state had the right to choose the logo and the residents had the right NOT to display it. "LIVE FREE OR DIE" is still being used today.

Special thanks to Patty G. of Sandown, NH for her tremendous contribution of license plates.
